Netxol Core vs Cisco / Nokia appliance-based ISP platforms

Cisco (with Prime + BNG + IOS XR) and Nokia (with Altiplano + SR-OS + 7750/7250) sell integrated appliance + software stacks to national and tier-1 operators. They are excellent. They are also priced and packaged for organisations Netxol is not competing with head-on.

Netxol Core targets the small-and-medium FTTH operator category — 5,000 to 500,000 subscribers — that the tier-1 vendors typically address through resellers with pared-down offers. In that segment, the deal-breaker is total cost of ownership: appliance + software + support + training + integrator, over three years.

When Cisco or Nokia is still the right call

For carrier-grade transport, MPLS core, IP/MPLS SR-OS features and other tier-1 needs, Cisco and Nokia are extremely strong. Netxol is not competing on those axes. Netxol is competing on the FTTH access + business-operations layer where the operator lives.

The right axis to evaluate on

Cisco and Nokia sell to tier-1 carriers. Netxol Core is optimised for the operator with 5,000 to 500,000 subscribers — where a fully-integrated appliance-plus-OS model materially reduces total cost of ownership. The technical comparison per capability is not the interesting one; the packaging and TCO comparison is. See the [Netxol Core hardware line](/products/core) and the [tier framing on the NOS page](/products/nos).

Coexistence

Netxol integrates cleanly with Cisco / Nokia core transport — see the internal [platform framing post](/blog/ai-operating-system-for-isps). The typical model is Cisco / Nokia in the MPLS backbone, Netxol at the FTTH access layer.
