SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (NPM) has been an enterprise NMS default for two decades. For carrier and ISP evaluators, the more interesting question is not "how much can it do?" — it is "does it do the specific things a fibre operator needs, or would we still need three more tools alongside?"
NPM is a licence-heavy, per-node-priced Windows-anchored enterprise product with a broad feature set — SNMP monitoring, NetFlow, syslog, wireless management, IPAM add-on and more. It is a mature product that solved a lot of enterprise problems in the 2010s. For an ISP building today, its shape mismatches on three specific axes.
Cost model
SolarWinds is priced per element. An FTTH network with 20 OLTs and 40,000 ONTs turns that pricing model into a very large annual bill — and typically pushes operators to monitor only the OLTs, not the ONTs. Where SolarWinds still fits
If you are running a mixed enterprise + service-provider environment where the network-monitoring surface has to include Windows servers, VMware, IIS, on-prem Exchange and so on alongside your access network — SolarWinds might still be the right choice for the enterprise side. Netxol NMM is deliberately shaped for the FTTH access + core network, plus the operating layer above it.
The three-year TCO exercise for a 50,000-subscriber operator
Modelling assumptions: 20 OLTs (mixed Huawei plus ZTE), 60,000 ONTs, 12 routers, 200 access switches. SolarWinds NPM element pricing (published list) escalates linearly at that node count and requires the NCM add-on for configuration management. Where SolarWinds still wins
